I am excited to present Blakawout's Haitian Heritage Month graphic. Haitian Flag Day, a pivotal moment in our history, marks the birth of the Haitian Flag in 1803. Similarly, Haitian Heritage Month is a time to pay homage to our vibrant culture and heritage. This graphic is a lively tribute to the Haitian Women and Men who have contributed significantly across various industries, placing Haitian culture, language, and people at the forefront with refreshing and fresh perspectives. It's a celebration of our diversity, determination, resilience, and love of life.

Artwork by Caryl Philippe for Blakawout Studios
Since I migrated to the U.S., I've had to adjust to this new lifestyle of the Haitian diaspora, a journey that many of us share. My current reality is now that of a Haitian living in the U.S. However, throughout this journey, I've encountered individuals who have encouraged me to redefine the concept of 'Home' to encompass and welcome any place where our culture and people thrive. Through their films, artwork, creativity, and activism, I've felt, seen, and rejoiced in their action to document and preserve this home. With this shared experience in mind, this graphic honors the Haitian artists, changemakers, filmmakers, activists, and people pushing the boundaries to ensure that Haitians see more of themselves in their Home Away From Home.
These are just a few individuals who keep Haiti on their minds and work. I look forward to sharing more of them with you as we grow at the Blakawout Neighborhood.
I am grateful and delighted to have collaborated with Caryl, a Haitian multimedia artist, and longtime family friend who has breathed life into this vision with his stunning digital artwork. I gave him the images I wanted to incorporate and shared some creative details and specs, and he put them all together in his own way. This graphic shows specks of Haitian historical landmarks, a nod to the Haitian Flag, familiar faces, and new ones, creating a vibrant testament that preserves Haitian people and communities.

Community Question: Leave your comment below
What aspects of your Haitian Heritage are essential to the next generation? Your language, your music, your food, your traditions?
And for my non-Haitian audience - I know you know at least one Haitian person perhaps a middle school classmate. My question for you is
What part of Haitian culture have you experienced that you appreciate?
Haiti NOU LA. Menm si nou pa nan peyi a. NOU LA!
xoxo
